Who does this include?

These services are available to volunteers in the following categories:

  • Research assistants
  • Volunteers completing projects or publications for specific Rush departments, clinicians, or faculty

Volunteers must be approved by a department head. To find out if you are eligible for library privileges, please visit the Library Services Desk or call (312) 942-5950.

Your Library Account

Are you new to the library?

Only volunteers registered with the Volunteer Office and sponsored by a department at Rush can register to request articles, borrow books, and access library materials from off campus. In order to register, you must submit a completed library registration form, available via the link below or at the Library Services Desk in Suite 571 of the Armour Academic Center, and a letter from your sponsoring individual or department. This request must be on the sponsoring department’s letterhead, and should include:

  1. The sponsoring individual or department’s name and contact information
  2. An accounting unit number
  3. The volunteer's name, address, and phone number
  4. The nature of the volunteer's relationship with Rush
  5. The specific privileges required, e.g.:
    1. Borrowing privileges at the Rush University Medical Center Library and through the I-Share network
    2. Interlibrary loan privileges (e.g. to request articles or book chapters not in the Library’s collection)
    3. Off-campus access to resources provided by the Library (a proxy account)
  6. A note stating the sponsoring individual or department will be responsible for any and all charges incurred
  7. If necessary, an expiration date not later than year from the date of request

The letter will be kept on file and the individual’s privileges will expire in one year (unless a shorter term is specified in the letter). If you or your department have any questions, please contact the Library Services Desk at (312) 942-5950 or

Access to Library Materials

Materials at Rush

All registered users of the Library can check out materials and use the Library’s online resources. To register, stop by the Library Services Desk or fill out a form at

Off-Campus Access

Volunteers may be granted off-campus access to Library resources, via a proxy account, based upon the needs of the sponsoring department, clinician, or faculty. The library will provide eligible volunteers with a proxy account username and password.

I-Share Borrowing Privileges

The Library of Rush University Medical Center is a member of a group of 86 Illinois academic libraries that allow reciprocal borrowing. This is a free service offered to Rush University Medical Center faculty through our online catalog system. Borrowing requests can be made online, via the online catalog, or in person at any I-Share library. Libraries that participate in this reciprocal agreement include UIC, UIUC, DePaul, and IIT.

Our librarians provide comprehensive literature searches. Prior to utilizing our Librarian Assisted Search service, we ask that students meet with a librarian to learn database searching strategies.
