What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan can be used to request PDFs of journal articles and book chapters and physical items which are not available through the I-Share network.

To open an ILLiad account, you must:

  1. Complete this form to register as a Rush University Medical Center Library patron (or update your current registration).
  1. Go to the ILLiad home page and click Open an ILLiad account to create your account.

Note: If you have used ILLiad in the past, do not create a new account. Click "Forgot your ILLiad password" to recover your existing account. Duplicate accounts will not be permitted to place requests.

Journal Article and Book Chapter Requests:

Journal articles and book chapters are delivered electronically and are free for students, faculty, and staff associated with a Rush Cost Center. Alumni, fund owners and other users not associated with a Rush Cost Center will be charged $7 for journal articles or book chapters.

Requests are processed Monday though Friday. Requests may be submitted 24/7 via ILLiad. Nearly 80% of requests are filled within 3 business days.

Print Material and Media Requests: 

Print materials and media requests are free for students, faculty, and staff associated with a Rush Cost Center. Users must be able to pick up and return requested items to the Library. Distance Education students should make arrangements with their local library to order books.

Print materials and media are shipped through the US Postal service and can take up to 2 weeks for delivery.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through InterLibrary Loan.

How do I sign up to use ILLiad?

To sign up for ILLiad, you must first be a registered library user. To register with the library, please submit a registration form. You may then create an account in ILLiad.

After submitting your ILLiad registration, you will be prompted to add an account. Please provide your cost center and fund number if applicable. If you do not wish to add an account, click "exit to main menu" in the upper left corner. Students and those not associated with a cost center should leave this blank.

What if I forget my username or password?

If you forget your password, please contact the Library Services desk at (312) 942-5950. You can also email lib_ref@rush.edu.

We will reset your ILLiad password. After this reset, please log in to ILLiad and change your password.

What is the charge for requesting materials?

All interlibrary loan requests are free for students, faculty, and staff associated with a Rush cost center. Alumni, fund owners, and users not associated with a Rush cost center will be charged $7 for journal articles or book chapters.

How quickly will my materials arrive?

Nearly 80% of electronic article and book chapter requests are filled within three business days. Print materials and media are shipped through the US Postal service and can take up to 2 weeks for delivery.

How will I receive my materials?

Electronic journal articles and book chapters will be delivered to your ILLiad account. You will receive an e-mail when you are able to access your item.

Print materials and media must be picked up at and returned to the Library.

I am a distance education student. How can I obtain materials?

Distance education students may use ILLiad to request electronic delivery of journal articles and book chapters. We are not able to offer Interlibrary Loan services of books and other print materials unless you are able to pick up and return the material to the Library. Distance education students should make arrangements with their local library to order books.
